Erectile Dysfunction in Portugal: Numbers and Social Consequences

Erectile dysfunction in Portugal is a health problem that affects a large number of men, especially over the age of 40. It is characterised by the persistent inability to obtain or maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual intercourse. Although it is a common problem, many men avoid seeking medical help because of the stigma associated with it.

Prevalence of Erectile Dysfunction in Portugal

Studies carried out in Portugal indicate that around 40% of men over 40 report some degree of erectile dysfunction. This number increases significantly with age, reaching more than 60% among men over the age of 60. Among young adults, the prevalence is lower, but there is an increase in cases due to factors such as stress, anxiety and excessive use of pornography.

Erectile dysfunction can be categorised into different degrees of severity:

  • Lightweight: occasional difficulty in getting or maintaining an erection.
  • Moderate: frequent episodes that affect the quality of sex life.
  • Severe: complete inability to get an erection, regardless of the situation.

Studies show that approximately 25% of the cases are moderate and 10% severeneed to be monitored by a doctor.

What Can Cause Erectile Dysfunction?

ED can have physical or psychological causes, and is often a symptom of underlying illnesses. The main risk factors include:

  • Cardiovascular diseases: High blood pressure, atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease affect blood flow to the penis.
  • Diabetes: men with diabetes have a three times higher risk of developing ED.
  • Obesity and a sedentary lifestyle: contribute to metabolic problems that affect erectile function.
  • Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption: are directly related to vascular impairment.
  • Psychological factors: Anxiety, depression and stress are common causes of erectile dysfunction.

The Impact of Erectile Dysfunction on Physical and Emotional Health

ED affects not only physical health, but also emotional well-being and relationships. Men who face this problem often report decreased self-esteem, depressive symptoms and marital difficulties. Partners can also feel an emotional impact, which emphasises the importance of appropriate treatment and psychological support when necessary.

Medical Help for Erectile Dysfunction: How and When to Seek It?

Despite the high prevalence, only 30% for men with erectile dysfunction seek medical help. Stigma, shame and lack of information prevent many from seeking treatment. However, there is growing awareness of the importance of medical follow-up in order to identify the underlying causes and recommend appropriate solutions.

In Portugal, urologists and andrologists are the most sought-after specialists for diagnosing and treating ED. O National Health Service (SNS) offers specialised consultations, but there are also options available in the private sector, including detailed assessments and multidisciplinary approaches.

The Importance of Diagnosis and Treatment

Erectile dysfunction is a common condition among Portuguese men, with significant impacts on quality of life and relationships. Despite its high prevalence, shame and stigma are still barriers to seeking treatment. Raising awareness about the relationship between ED and cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and psychological factors is fundamental to stimulating the search for specialised help and improving male sexual health in Portugal.

If you are looking for professional support and effective solutions, the Doctor on the Net offers specialised consultations for the diagnosis and treatment of erectile dysfunction, helping you to regain your confidence and well-being.
