Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). There are two types of HSV: HSV-1 and HSV-2. While HSV-1 usually causes cold sores, HSV-2 is mainly responsible for genital herpes. However, both types of HSV can cause genital herpes.
How it's transmitted:
You can contract genital herpes through contact with the skin or body fluids of an infected person. The virus is transmitted during sexual contact, whether vaginal, anal or oral. Symptoms of genital herpes usually appear between 2 and 12 days after exposure to the virus and can include:- Blisters or sores in the genital area
- Itching, burning or pain in the genital area
- Pain when urinating
- Fever
- Headache
- Malaise
