Who this consultation is for

Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). There are two types of HSV: HSV-1 and HSV-2. While HSV-1 usually causes cold sores, HSV-2 is mainly responsible for genital herpes. However, both types of HSV can cause genital herpes.

How it's transmitted:

You can contract genital herpes through contact with the skin or body fluids of an infected person. The virus is transmitted during sexual contact, whether vaginal, anal or oral. Symptoms of genital herpes usually appear between 2 and 12 days after exposure to the virus and can include:
  • Blisters or sores in the genital area
  • Itching, burning or pain in the genital area
  • Pain when urinating
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Malaise
Although there is no cure for genital herpes, you can control the symptoms and reduce the risk of transmission with medication. Treatments, usually administered orally, help manage outbreaks.

How to prevent it:

To prevent genital herpes, the best practice is to use condoms during sex. However, even with the use of condoms, prevention is not 100% effective, as the virus can be transmitted through contact with the skin or body fluids. Although genital herpes is generally not dangerous, it can cause pain and discomfort. In some cases, it can lead to complications, such as secondary bacterial infection. We offer you a Consultation service, where we use a questionnaire to quickly and safely create a personalised plan to deal with your situation. Our doctors suggest and approve treatments in accordance with best practice in Portugal. This service is intended for non-urgent situations. If you don't feel well, call 112 in urgent or emergency cases, or SNS 24 - 808242424 in non-urgent situations. If you have any doubts about your health problem or treatment, we advise you to book an appointment with Telephone Consultation or Video Appointment.
