Medical Certificate for Driving Licences in Portugal

Introduction

In Portugal, obtaining a medical certificate for a driving licence is an essential step in ensuring that drivers meet the health requirements needed to drive safely. In this article, we detail everything you need to know about the process and explain how our platform, Médico na Net, can make the whole procedure easier through a video consultation. Through this service, we send the medical certificate directly to the Institute of Mobility and Transport (IMT) via imtonline.

What is the Driving Licence Medical Certificate?

The medical certificate for a driving licence is an official document that proves that the prospective driver, or the driver wishing to renew their licence, has the physical and mental capacities required to drive a vehicle. This certificate is therefore compulsory for several categories of driving licence, both for new drivers and for periodic renewals.

Who needs a medical certificate?

In Portugal, the medical certificate is required in the following cases:

  • First issue of driving licence;
  • Driving licence renewal, especially for drivers over 50;
  • Obtaining an endorsement for group II (ambulances, fire engines, patient transport, school transport, collective transport of children or passenger cars for hire);
  • Foreign driving licence exchanges;
  • Whenever there is a significant change in the driver's state of health that could affect their ability to drive.
