Medical leave due to anxiety and emotional symptoms

Mental health is increasingly valued and, fortunately, the prejudice against it is diminishing. Intense anxietyPanic attacks, insomnia, difficulty concentrating or episodes of deep sadness can all be symptoms of burnout.

These emotional signs should be taken seriously and are fully valid for a medical assessment with the possibility of prescribing rest.

Acute pain and disabling conditions

Once disabling pain - such as back pain, migraines, severe abdominal pain or muscle injuries - can justify a break from work. Pain is one of the most obvious signs that something isn't right in the body.

If it prevents simple movements or affects concentration, it should be a warning sign. In these cases, a doctor can determine the necessary time off work to allow for treatment and proper recovery.

What is the difference between sick leave and justification for absence?

Although they seem similar, the sick leave and justification for absence are different procedures with different purposes.

Sick leave is issued by a health professional after an assessment and is valid for periods of absence due to illness or temporary incapacity - and can have an impact on pay, allowances and employment rights.

Justification of absence, on the other hand, is a communication to the employer about the absence from work, which may or may not have a medical basis. For example, a routine doctor's appointment can be justified with an attendance declaration, but it doesn't entitle you to sick leave.

In cases of illness with symptoms that make it impossible to work, sick leave is the correct and legally recognised document.
